With the obvious exception of Oscar Peterson, many of the jazz musicians who have emerged from Canada haven't rightfully received the level of recognition they deserve. Two of the most prominent Canadian players to gain attention during the 1970s (for their work with Paul Desmond), guitarist Ed Bickert and pianist Don Thompson (who is better known as a bassist) join forces for this 1980 duo session, exploring a half dozen jazz compositions by Thelonious Monk ("Ruby, My Dear" and "Blue Monk"), Toots Thielemans ("Bluesette"), Miles Davis ("Solar"), Paul Desmond ("Take Five") and John Handy ("Dance to the Lady"). There's plenty of fire and risk-taking by both men throughout this boppish session, and Thompson fans will be delighted with his tremendous chops on his "second" instrument (he also plays vibes on occasion).
